Reference from Bill Briggs Regional Security Advisor (UK&Western Europe)
'I first got to know James in April 2006 when I joined Barclays Global Corporate Security as a Regional Security Manager covering part of Europe and Africa. At that time I was very heavily involved in the rollout of globally networked electronic security systems to the newly formed Barclays Wealth and parts of Barclays Global Investors. This was a £10 million project, but very little had been committed to it in terms of internal operational resource. James was a senior manager, within the contract security team, which supported the Barclays Capital Investment Banking business globally. It was quickly clear to me that James had personally developed most of the systems that they operated on at that time. I will always be grateful to James for responding to my requests for help so positively and effectively despite not being asked to do so by his own direct line management. James played an indispensable role in extending the good practice that had been developed in Barclays Capital across the new estate. This included leading the evolution of processes and systems in our Security Control Room in London. At the beginning of the process it was monitoring and supporting a single campus in Canary Wharf and by the end it was directly supporting over 80 sites in Europe and the Middle East. The London Security Control Room team also provided leadership by example to satellite teams in control rooms in New York, Singapore, Moscow, Johannesburg and a number of other locations.
During 2009, following a departmental organisation, I filled the role of Global Corporate Security Vice President responsible for the United Kingdom and Offshore Islands. James’ support again proved invaluable as we extended our coverage across the remaining smaller Barclays Wealth sites and began to embrace Barclays Corporate sites following a wider reorganisation of the bank. He also played a critical role in further developing the governance and assurance processes around our systems to meet the increasingly detailed demands of the bank's Compliance and Internal Audit functions. During 2010 onwards, when I had moved on to be VP responsible for Western Europe, I continue to turn to James for support and advice as we develop new teams and capabilities in that region.
Throughout the period that I worked with James he was constantly battling with a huge workload and a wide range of sometimes competing demands from many different clients-effectively he ended up with responsibilities at local, regional and global levels. Despite this, he almost invariably delivered what was required.
I would summarise the positive attributes that James brings to any task as:
· Positive attitude.
· Enthusiasm.
· Client focus.
· An incredibly strong work ethic.
· Deep experience and knowledge of the systems, processes, and procedures needed to maintain security at individual sites or campuses and to run effective 'control room' operations.
The development area that James continued to work on in the very demanding circumstances that I've described above was the 'reverse side' of his positive attitude and client focus. This obviously creates a risk of accepting more demands and work than he and his team can effectively cope with. I saw James continually develop his skills in managing client expectations over the period I worked with him. While maintaining a tremendous client focus and an analytical approach to understanding requirements he did become much more likely to say 'let me take a look at that for you' rather than an immediate yes. I'm sure that James will maintain this discipline in any new role he takes on, and as a result, his excellent professional attributes will deliver significant benefits to his employer.'

To whom it may concern. Dear Sir or Madam,
I had the pleasure of hiring James Machin as a Senior Security Manager with Western Union in August of 2012.
He was a very dedicated employee and a great team worker during his tenure with the Global Safety and Security Team. His work ethic and desire to learn was refreshing. James picked up the job duties quickly and effortlessly. In 2015 James was promoted to Security Director. Part of James security duties and responsibilities included directing global physical security programs, the coordination of contracted guard services and security access management control systems. It was my pleasure to work with James during our time together at Western Union.
Best Regards,
Kendall Kern
